Michael Shindler

Shindlers captivating style of portraiture is made even more special through his work with tintypes. He does these photos in a matter of minutes to give to complete strangers that walk into his studio.

Emil Schildt

Schildt is a contemporary photographer that experiments with a variety of alternative processes, and produces beautiful portraits, and many of his photographs seem to center around the female form.

Phil Nesmith

Nesmith uses wet collodian ambrotypes on black glass with an oil varnish on this series of work, Line of Sight. In this body of work he explores some very secure locations that the United States have built for our security. With the process he chooses, he modifies our understanding of time, bending and folding to memory. He questions the idea of progress, and America's obsession with security and uses this process to maybe allow us to see something change. I love how the artist has put his beliefs behind his medium choice and how its represented within the photograph.

The reason that I picked this artist was because he has strong work, he seems to try a little bit of everything and is able to come out with successful images.

Ben Nixon

Wet Plate Process

I chose Ben Nixon because his images transcend time and transforms landscapes beyond just beautiful mountains and trees. 

Postmortem Juarez

Brenda Perry makes tintype prints of actual crime-scene photos taken in Juarez, Mexico. She calls them modern postmortem portraits and uses them to honor the dead and document the plight of Juarez working class. My favorite part of this project is the reallocation of the idea of a postmortem portrait using a darkroom process (tintype) which is historically significant to the documentation of the working class. 

This is a wet plate collodion print made by Ivan Sohrakoff. I chose this image because it represents many parts of what I like most about a lot of alt. process work especially wet plate prints and cyanotypes. The whites that are achieved in this and other images like it are what drew me to this work.
